Four ways I can help

Quality of Earnings & Due Diligence

Buying a business? Know what you're really buying before you sign. I dig into the seller's earnings, cash flow, and working capital, and I put it in a report your bank and your lawyer can use. Priced for Main Street deals, not private equity.

Buying something? Get a diligence quote first

Fractional CFO

Board-level strategy at a part-time price. Financing, forecasting, investor and lender conversations: the work a growing company needs from a CFO, without the full-time salary.

Growing fast? Book a CFO call

Accounting Support

Clean books, closed months, reports you can actually read. Controller-level support plus data work in Excel, at whatever cadence your business needs.

Books a mess? Let's clean them up

Reporting & Dashboards

Power BI dashboards that pull straight from your ERP and accounting system, so you see margin, cash and operational performance without waiting on month-end. Every model reconciles back to the general ledger, so the numbers on the dashboard are the numbers in your financials. Reporting your team actually trusts.

Flying blind? Let's build the dashboard

Selected work

Most of my clients are under NDA, so no names. The work instead: manufacturers, retail roll-ups, distributors, software companies. A lot of it was for private equity buyers, and that's deliberate. It's the standard I bring to a Main Street deal, at a Main Street price.

  1. Fractional CFO

    Growth manufacturer, losses to profitability

A Mountain West manufacturer losing money at $3M in revenue. I built the costing and inventory foundation, secured financing to extend runway, and put FP&A oversight in place through the growth phase. The company scaled to $12M in revenue at sustained profitability.

  2. Fractional CFO

    PE-backed retail roll-up

A hardware retail chain executing a multi-store acquisition strategy. I ran Quality of Earnings analysis on the acquisition targets, built consolidated multi-entity P&L reporting, and managed cash across locations while supporting budgeting and integration accounting.

  3. Fractional CFO

    SaaS transaction readiness

Embedded with a private equity backed software company preparing for a sale process. I led the financial data room preparation, rebuilt monthly reporting, and partnered with the internal finance team through diligence.

  4. Quality of Earnings & Due Diligence

    Multi-store acquisition diligence

Quality of Earnings analysis on retail acquisition targets for a PE-backed buyer, delivering adjustment schedules and normalized EBITDA analysis that informed both the purchase decisions and the integration plan.

  5. Reporting & Dashboards

    $100M distributor, reporting transformation

Power BI reporting and dashboard analytics for a $100M Pacific Northwest distributor, replacing legacy reporting with real analysis of profitability and inventory. The self-serve layer gave leadership visibility into margin and inventory performance for the first time.

Most firms test a sample.
I test every dollar.

Traditional diligence checks a handful of big transactions and hopes the rest behaves. With AI-assisted analysis I trace every transaction all the way through: big-firm depth, no big-firm team, no big-firm invoice.

Twenty-plus years in finance, across three company sizes from family shops to the S&P 500. The last five years: zero advertising, one hundred percent referrals.

The CPA behind MMI

I'm Brandon Cantrell, CPA. Alabama roots, Portland, Oregon since 2015. I've been staff accountant, controller, and CFO at companies from local family businesses to S&P 500 players, and for the last five years I've run my own practice on word of mouth alone.

That arc matters: when I look at your numbers, I've usually seen your exact problem before, at three different company sizes.

MMI is named after Miss Molly, the senior of our two golden retrievers. My wife insisted. She was right.

Working together is simple

  1. Call or text. You get me, not a front desk.
  2. Free scoping chat. We figure out what you actually need. Sometimes the answer is "less than you think."
  3. Clear proposal. Fixed scope, flat quote, no surprise invoices.

Fair questions

What does this cost?

Every engagement gets a flat, fixed quote before any work starts. Diligence work is priced per deal; CFO and accounting support are priced by cadence. No hourly meters running in the background.

Do you only work with Portland companies?

No. I'm based in Portland, but most of my work is remote and my clients are spread across the country. Numbers travel well.

What's a quality of earnings report, in plain English?

It answers one question: are the profits this business claims to make real, and will they still be there after you buy it? I verify the earnings, flag what's inflated or one-time, and tell you what the cash flow really looks like.

My books are a mess. Do I need to clean them up before calling?

Please don't. Messy books are half my job, and I'd rather see them as they are. There is no judgment here; I've seen far worse than whatever you're picturing.

What size company do you work with?

Mostly small and mid-size businesses: owner-operated companies, first-time buyers, and growing teams that need finance leadership before they can afford it full-time.
